Consumer Credit Counselling Service

CCCS is part of the Foundation for Credit Counselling, a Leeds-based charity working to help people who are in financial difficulty by providing free, impartial advice.

CCCS uses a free national helpline, ten regional centres and an online Debt Remedy solution to help people anywhere in the UK fight against debt. Counselling is available on matters such as budgeting, credit card use, and achievable debt repayment plans.

CCCS works with a number of partner organisations to connect with disadvantaged members of society by running workshops and drop-ins, and by taking part in both third-sector and local government initiatives.

Citizens Advice Bureau

Citizens Advice Bureau's website, Adviceguide, intends to equip people with information to help them resolve their own problems, and to point them towards appropriate centres for advice where necessary.

Adviceguide helps people to become better informed regarding their rights and entitlements. The website covers law in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, providing fact pages on debt and consumer issues, as well as on choosing a solicitor and seeking expert advice.

The Adviceguide website is regularly updated so as to retain high levels of accuracy and reliability.

National Debtline

National Debtline is a free, confidential organisation working to help people in the UK who are in financial difficulty. National Debtline examines individual debts, and the options available for dealing with these debts. Specialist advice is reinforced with complimentary self-help material, and in some instances, can be followed up with free assistance in creating a Debt Management Plan or debt relief order.

National Debtline uses an entirely confidential system involving trained advisers who ask specific questions about the financial status of the individual, so as to be able to deliver carefully tailored advice for any given circumstance. As well as suggesting different possible courses of action, the advisers give specific instructions on how to implement these choices and begin reversing the debt process.

Payplan

Payplan provides free debt advice (external link) and free IVAs and debt management plans. Supported by a number of organisations including agencies, unions and members of the credit industry, they are the largest provider of debt management plans and IVAs in the country.

Although it is supported by commercial partners in the credit industry including many big finance players, the advice and solutions it provides are impartial and you shouldn't feel pressured to enter into any particular agreements.

Debt Advice Foundation

Debt Advice Foundation offers free, confidential support and advice on issues such as loans, credit and debt, and delivers education initiatives as well as one-to-one consultations.

Debt Advice Foundation aims to tackle consumer debt problems in the UK, both through helping those currently in need of support, and increasing the awareness of the next generation through 'financial literacy'. The organisation provides access to free debt solutions, as well as promoting the education of teenagers and young adults in the area of money management, to prevent debt misuse in later life.

Debt Advice Foundation is involved in research seeking to understand the cause and effects of debt on individuals, families, and the economy.

CAP works nationally through 150 operational centres based out of local churches, and seeks to offer hope for those in debt through its in-depth service.

CAP provides a practical, 'hands on' approach to tackling debt, enabling people to help themselves out of poverty, and in the process, find release from the anxiety and entrapment caused by owing large sums of money. CAP's sustainable approach gives clients key lessons in budgeting, a skill which will retain its value across the course of a lifetime.

CAP's centres are run in partnership with the local church, and having started in Bradford in 1996, CAP intends to operate within every major town and city throughout the UK by 2015, as an answer to the nationwide problem of debt.
