Abbey Building Society
The Abbey Building Society, also known as the Abbey Bank or Abbey National plc, was acquired by the Santander Group in November 2004. Alliance & Leicester and the Bradford & Bingley savings business and branches followed with their acquisition in October 2008.
The Santander Group
The Santander Group was founded in Spain over 150 years ago and as both a commercial and retail bank has a presence in worldwide markets including Europe and North and South America. Now operating under the name Santander, it is one of the biggest high street banks in the UK with over 1,300 branches nationwide.
Abbey, with its roots as a building society, offered many competitive banking services and was once the largest provider of mortgages and savings in the UK. Santander UK continues to carry on the Abbey's, and its own, historic tradition of banking and can now boast to be one of the leading personal financial services companies; remaining one of the largest providers of mortgages and savings in the UK.
